About
|
Science Olympiad is a national middle school and high school team competition in which students compete in events under the umbrella of STEM. Teams function much like a football or soccer team, requiring preparation, commitment, coaching and practice throughout the year.
We like to think fondly of Science Olympiad as the "Nerd Olympics." Like the Olympics, Science Olympiad encompasses multiple "events" which make up the whole competition. There are 23 events pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. We like to further categorize events into study, lab, and build events:
2-3 partners are placed on each event to work together in preparation and competition. Several awards are won from medals for events, trophies for overall team placement, and plaques for team spirit. Competition levels go as following: invitationals: practice competitions- our team will attend 2-3 invitational competitions between October-January. Regionals: the first competition to progress to the next level. Usually held in March. State: regional competition winners compete to progress to Nationals and represent our state. Usually held in April. Nationals: The top two teams from each state tournament compete at the final level of competition. Usually held in May. |
